This non-profit organization, which conducts a large and successful conference each February focusing on students with behavioral needs, is sponsoring this unique third annual conference for administrators. Additional information is at www.mslbd.org.

Intended Audience. The conference is intended specifically for school building administrators (principals, assistant and associate principals). However, other administrators (superintendents, special education directors and other district administrators) will also find it helpful.

Conference Goal. The conference will provide top-quality, research-grounded information and practices tailored specifically for the needs of administrators who are working to improve the behavior of students in their schools.

Why a Conference for Administrators on “Behavior”? The expertise and support of administrators are crucial in working with students with behavioral needs. Historically, little attention has been paid to administrators’ need for knowledge and skills in working with students and staff regarding behavior and discipline issues. While we are award of the recent focus on academic standards and testing in schools, we recognize that improving and supporting the behavior of students in school is an important element in achieving our academic goals. As a result we are trying to provide information pertinent to and accessible by school administrators.


Two Keynote Presentations


  • What Every Administrator Needs to Know About Improving Social and Academic Behavior Through a Continuum of Supports. 

Tim Lewis, Ph.D., is Professor and Associate Dean of Graduate & International Studies, University of Missouri Columbia, Missouri. He has researched and published numerous articles and grants relating to Positive Behavior Supports.
As every administrator knows, there is no single strategy that will eliminate problem behavior or impact poor academic performance. However, educators can increase the likelihood students achieve academically and socially by creating environments that embed an integrated continuum of supports. The core features and rationale for creating universal academic and social systems of support will be overviewed along with examples of school successes and struggles.


  • Building a School in the Heart of the City: What Every Administrator Needs to Know – What it Takes and What I’ve Learned. 

Kris Melloy, Ph.D., is Principal, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota. She assisted in building an inner city school from feasibility study to the first years of operation.
She will share insights into what it takes to build a positive school culture from the ground up and provide reflections on what has gone well and what they are doing differently to positively effect the education of students who would not otherwise have an opportunity to attend a college preparatory high school given their life circumstances and academic achievement levels.

1. What Every Administrator Needs to Know About Disciplining Students with Disabilities: Legal Considerations and Practice Considerations. 

Antonis Katsiyannis, Ed.D., Professor of Special Education, Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina. This presentation will provide an examination of IDEA 2004 amendments regarding discipline with a particular emphasis on "Manifestation Determination", "Behavior Intervention Plans", and "Interim Alternative Education Settings". Recent court cases and practice considerations will also be presented.


2. What Every Administrator Needs to Know About Behavior Management. 

James Teagarden, Ed.D., Assistant Professor of Special Education, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas. Administrators will receive information on how to increase teacher skills in classroom management, address problem behavior, and how to promote positive student behavior.


3. What Every Administrator Needs to Know About Autism Spectrum Disorder. 

Brenda Scheuermann, Ph.D., Professor of Special Education, Texas State University, San Marcos, Texas. Children with autism spectrum disorders pose significant challenges for educators and educational systems. Administrators need to have a working knowledge of effective programming for these students, and should understand terminology related to educational programs and practices. Participants will learn essential characteristics of autism, best practices for educating students with autism, and terminology often used to reference educational programs and practices. In addition, participants will be given tips for evaluating teachers of students with autism spectrum disorders with respect to teachers’ use of effective educational practices.
